Ocean House History
The original house was built in 1868 and was one of the grand hotels along the New England coast that people came to in the summer to get away from the heat of the city, especially New York. In 2003, it finally closed. It was showing its age. The number of guests had decreased over the years and with the lower revenue, not enough repairs were done to maintain the grand old hotel. When we stayed there in 1987, even then we wondered how safe the building was. It had great bones but had obviously seen better days. In 2004 a new structure was planned to replace the old hotel. The rooms are larger and more luxurious but from the outside, the hotel looks like a refurbished of the original grand hotel. It is now more popular than ever.
